 What is a mentor? Judge a mentor by what he does. A good business mentor will share with you advice from their own experience, plus wisdom gained and lessons learned over many years in business.     For example, when I started my first business, my bank refused us a loan and I started with my own savings. It was less than I needed, but we managed. To cut costs, I hired three part-time mentors as an advisory panel, and with their help and guidance, we went from success to success, with no debt burden to hold us back.     Lesson #1 – Don't borrow money to start a business! If you do, you will not be in control – whoever lends you the money calls the shots.

    If you have insufficient money, pool resources. Some very successful companies started as partnerships – Microsoft (Gates and Allen), Apple (Jobs and Wozniak), Cisco (Bosack and Lerner), HP (Hewlett and Packard). Sears (Sears and Roebuck), Disney (Roy and Walt Disney). And others.

    Lesson #2 – People function better as a team. Find a mentor. Having a partner, or a mentor, gives you someone to talk with, discuss ideas, and receive support and encouragement.

    We make choices every day – better choices mean better results. Find a mentor to assist with those choices. When your business is running well, consulting a business mentor will help you expand. When expansion seems impossible, a business mentoring program can be an ideal solution.
